Chapter Four

Pemberley.

Two months later.

Lizzy watched as the servants washed the floors. Standing where she was frowned when she recalled how the halls of Pemberley were always required to be cleaned for this season. Since she knew being mistress meant she was to oversee the household cleanings, not to mention as the chores for the lady servants, watching how the first floor was being washed was one part of being Mrs. Darcy. Earlier that morning, Ftizwilliam informed her he would be occupied in his office and wished not to be bothered. She understood as he was always busy; occupied with the Constable and Lizzy heard less of the news Fitzwilliam would give her. The past two months were blessed yet Lizzy noticed how Ftizwilliam seemed to be distancing himself from her. Unlike before it felt more as if he wished only to “make love to her” when he felt obligated to it. But she loved him regardless of how he was at the moment. She peered over towards his office and saw the door was closed.

“Yes, indeed. He is occupied as I am as well.” She thought as she stared at the wooden doors. She envisioned Fitzwilliam seated at his desk; reading the latest word of the bandits who were robbing carriages and who the leader was. Ftizwilliam informed her about these a while back Lizzy knew too he was inolved with the constable and wished to capture them if possible – before the next waltzing season arrived. Lizzy knew too he didn’t want anything more to do with her sister, Lydia, who had not appeared since informing Lizzy she would no longer be mistress but Lydia would. Recalling this, Lizzy frowned harder as she thought. “And to presume she will become mistress? Indeed!”

“Mrs. Darcy?” A feminine inquired.

Turning, Lizzy looked and smiled as she greeted. “Mrs. Reynolds. How goes the trimming of the bushes outside?”

“Fairly well; thank you. Would there be anything else you would like? I know the late Mrs. Darcy always dusted the second and third floors once a month.”

“As mistress of Pemberley – she should know what needs to be cleaned and what does not.” A deeper voice interrupted.

Suddenly, both of the women turned when the figure of Mr. Darcy stood before them. Lizzy blinked when she beheld her husband, who must have exited the office and made his way up the stairs, stood behind Mrs. Reynolds, who didn’t seem bothered by the owner yet she too showed bewilderment at how he was able to appear so quick. Her heart beat when the kindly lady turned and after curtseying to Mr. Darcy answered. “Forgive me, sir, but I didn’t realize you were there!”

“Quite, Mrs. Reynolds. I believe you’re excused.” Mr. Darcy replied with a stoic expression. Upon noticing this, Lizzy’s heart beat more when Mr. Darcy looked at her. Once Mrs. Reynolds left, Mr. Darcy approached Lizzy as he said. “Mrs. Darcy? I would have presumed by now you were able to coordinate the chores for the women of the household.
